Santiago Schnell earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Venezuela before completing his doctoral studies in mathematical biology at the University of Oxford in 2002. Subsequently, he secured two prestigious research fellowships at the same institution before taking an assistant professorship at Indiana University in 2004. Santiago was appointed associate professor in the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology of the University of Michigan Medical School in 2018. He was promoted to full professor in 2015, followed by his appointment as department chair of Molecular & Integrative Physiology, a role he held from 2017 to 2021. Notably, in 2021, Santiago was appointed the William K. Warren Dean of the College of Science at the University of Notre Dame.
Schnell’s research program is based on the belief that health and disease exist as a continuum; the ability to measure this continuum would provide better opportunities for early detection and understanding of diseases, leading to more precise interventions. Schnell is internationally renowned for his pioneering research, which has significantly advanced our quantitative understanding of enzyme-catalyzed reactions. His most notable achievement is the formulation of the Schnell-Mendoza equation, a streamlined method for determining the physical constants of enzymes in both basic science and clinical laboratories. Furthermore, he has made significant contributions to the foundational enzymological quantitative model of the Polymerase Chain Reaction, an indispensable technique in the fields of life sciences, medical diagnostics, and forensic science.
Throughout his career, Santiago has garnered numerous accolades for his research and teaching endeavors. These include the Arthur Winfree Prize and the Emerging Leader in Health and Medicine Award bestowed by the US National Academy of Medicine. His distinguished status is underscored by his membership as a fellow of the Society for Mathematical Biology, the Royal Society of Biology, the Royal Society of Chemistry and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Eric Wood is a former NFL center for the Buffalo Bills where he was an immediate starter, two-time Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee and a pro bowler. Wood was selected in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Bills, a monumental achievement for someone who entered college with only one scholarship offer. Making the playoffs in 2017 and ending the Bills’ playoff drought serves as one of Wood’s most memorable moments in his NFL career; making the Pro Bowl has become one of his proudest professional accomplishments.
Wood played his entire nine-season NFL career for the Bills before an unexpected spinal injury ultimately ended his on-field career in 2018. With much left to offer the sport, he stayed involved in football as a commentator for the Buffalo Bills Radio Network, something he still does to this day. Wood also spent some time as a sports columnist for the Athletic. He has called games for FOX, ESPN, ACC Network and CBS. He has also appeared on the Jim Rome Show, NFL Network, The Herd with Colin Cowherd and the Rich Eisen Show to provide analysis.
Now, with a clear direction for what he’d like to do in his post-playing career, Wood spends the majority of his time working on his weekly podcast and sharing his book, “Tackle What’s Next.” On the show, he focuses on conducting interviews that impact and inspire by speaking with people who offer advice on how to lead a more effective and impactful life; people who had all faced a pivot point moment of their own, and made it work for them. Notable guests on the show include Jim Rome, Terrell Owens, Darnell “SuperChef” Ferguson, David Meltzer, Josh Allen, Mike Vrabel, Jana Kramer and Jason Tartick, among others. “Tackle What’s Next” seeks to deliver inspirational and insightful tips for preparing for the next big thing in your life. To put his ability to motivate and bring out the best in people to use, Wood has taken to performance coaching, working with the University of Louisville and a number of college athletes.
